SPECT This is a quick and easy tool that can be used in a variety of settings. This is my son's favorite tool to use when we are doing daily devotions together.
Have them write the letters S-P-E-C-T on a piece of paper. Each letter stands for a specific application of the lesson/passage. They all prompt you to think of how you can change and grow.
S – Sin – Is there a sin I need to avoid or confess that is presented in this passage/lesson?
P – Promise – Is there a promise from God that I can claim? What hope does this passage give me?
E– Example – What example or role model is in this passage? What negative examples are there?
C- Command – Is there a command given that I need to obey or work on?
T – Thanksgiving – What blessings do I have? What has God done for me?
TIPS FOR USING WITH A CLASS: Younger children – after doing this as a whole class, ask each child to pick one of the letters/items and draw a picture of what it means to them. Or you can ask them to act out one or more of the items.
Older children to adults – after they think on their own, have them share with the person next to them. Encourage them to share with the group if there is one item that is especially meaningful to them.
